Daten Bridge Club

I thought it might be useful to describe my own club and what we do.

Daten BC is a section of Culcheth Sports and Social Club (see link opposite for website) near Warrington. This gives us access to good facilities including separate bar and lounge.

We meet twice a week on Wednesday and Sunday. The club is over 40 years old and was originally the BNFL social club (Daten) and many members were 'boffins' from BNFL. Now we have just under 60 members but a high proportion are in their 80s now and recruitment is a concern.

Originally the Wednesday session held the main competitions and Sunday was a smaller 'social' occasion. Now we have competitions on both nights.

On the first Wed and Sunday we have our main competitions (Championship Pairs) which run through the year and members must play 7 times to qualify. On the second Wed and third Sunday we run similar but handicapped competitions.

We run various trophy events during the year including a Mixed Pairs and we have recently competed in the Children in Need Simultaneous Pairs. Finally we run Teams of 4 whenever there is a fifth Wednesday in the month.

I suppose this is a typical 'average' local club structure. We used to be members of the EBU but the membership saw little value from it and voted to scrap it!

We have tried some alternatives such as a competition, held monthly, where you had to play with a different partner each month but this was not popular.

Why not describe your club here? Especially, any differences and suggestions would be welcome!

Joe

Dear Joe, I was delighted to read your letter about Blogging in Bridge Magazine, and by that same evening had my own tentative Blog. I teach bridge via Adult Education and have long felt the need for some way to communicate with my students outside the classroom.

I moved to North Suffolk 3 years ago. I lived in Northants and played at Bedford Bridge Club for 20+ years before that, most of that time with the same partner.
There's a big difference in playing standards - at Bedford we had a fair number of Life and Grand Masters, and the regular Nos 1 & 2 in the EBU Most Master Points
Annual competition were members of Bedford. At my current clubs, few people go beyond a Simple System of bidding.

At Bedford an afternoon club was brought into being by Monica Lucy, who taught bridge, and this is still very popular, often attracting more than a dozen tables
on Mondays. Quite a number of these players graduate to the EBU-affiliated Bedford Bridge Club. The Monday club doesn't issue points, but awards bottles of wine. The rule is that you can't win the wine two weeks running, and I think there are other rules that preclude the sharks from winning too often.

For some reason I couldn't reach your Daten club via the address given, but bridgeclubsites led me to you.

Sincerely, Peter Rowlett
